An employee at Certegy Check Services, Inc., a subsidiary of Fidelity National Information Services, stole 2.3 million consumer records that included credit card, banking, and other personal information. The employee then sold the information to a data broker, who sold it to direct marketing companies.
Certegy says the data was not used for identity theft or fraud, but who really knows? The company says 2.2 million of the consumer records contained bank information, and 99,000 contained credit card information. Certegy is asking a court to stop all parties from using the information.
The employee who stole the information was a senior database administrator who was with Certegy for 7 years. He has been fired, and the company refers to him as a “rogue and dishonest employee.” The company is pursuing a civil action against him, and hopes that criminal charges will be filed too.
